This past week, on Thursday, August 20, the San Luis Obispo High School FFA leadership students put on the very first event on the year: the Welcome BBQ! We host this annual event before school starts to provide tours and information for our incoming Greenhands and their families. Every year, we have a great turn out, and this year was no exception! In case you missed out on the fun time, here is the welcome that Luke O’Leary, Chapter President, delivered.
During the brief presentation of information from involved members, teacher, Anna Bates, captured this moment of incoming freshmen and their families.
“1098. You’re probably wondering, ‘What does that number mean?’ Maybe it’s the number of students at SLOHS? No, we have more than that. Maybe, it’s how many students there are in the Ag. Dept. No, we have a little less than that. For all of you adults, no, I’m not talking about a 1098 tax form! 1098 days ago I was sitting in the very chair you are sitting in. 1098 days ago I stepped into this Ag. Dept. for the first time, knowing one or two other people at the most. 1098 days ago I took my first step on a journey that I will never regret – and one that is nearly coming to a close. Whatever the reason is for you being here, we are so excited to see that you have made the first step on your journey in the FFA. Maybe you have been waiting for years to join SLO FFA because of an older sibling who went through the program, or maybe you’re just here because you heard that Ag Science is a fun class. It is a fun class, but it is so much more than that. My name is Luke O’Leary. I am a senior at San Luis Obispo High School and President of San Luis Obispo FFA. This summer, me and my fellow officers decided on the theme for this year: Stay Hungry. Stay Hungry with Passion, Service, and Commitment. Throughout this year we will be focusing on these three aspects of leadership, beginning the year with passion. As we head into a new school year and a new season of FFA competitions and events, we hope you are passionate and excited for all the opportunities that await you, here at SLO FFA. My only advice as you begin high school: get ready for the time of your life! And remember: Stay Hungry, Tigers.”
San Luis Obispo FFA has an incredible BBQ Committee that helps with countless events over the year, the Welcome BBQ being the first of this school year!
After that awesome welcome was delivered, other leaders of our chapter spoke about various parts of our FFA Chapter, including what SAE Projects are, what FFA is, and the opportunities available to freshmen. At the BBQ, we also introduced our theme of “Stay Hungry.” Check out this video to learn more about it! We are so excited to see what the class of 2019 will accomplish in the next four years!
Have a great first week back at school, Tigers!
Involved members and leaders of the San Luis Obispo FFA Chapter volunteered their time to help with the Welcome BBQ and encourage freshmen to get involved in our chapter!
Also, as a new addition to our weekly blog posts, we will be adding a feature called “Suggested Weekly Song.” This song will connect to our blog post message of the week. Check out this week’s song, Alicia Keys’ 28 Thousand Days!
